“The Queen of the South: A Modern Reworking” is an interactive installation & immersive space design, originating from Alvin Lucier’s groundbreaking 1972 piece of the same name. This reimagined version pays homage to Lucier’s exploration of the relationship between sound and material, while pushing the boundaries of sound visualization through contemporary technologies and performative interaction.
As sound waves reflect and interfere across the surface, they form symmetrical patterns. The sand accumulates along these nodal lines, making the invisible structure of sound visible.
Chladni figures visualize sound by showing how sand responds to vibrations on a surface. High-amplitude areas repel sand, while low-amplitude (nodal) areas allow it to settle.
FOLD is an artist-led, community-focused studio committed to building a supportive ecosystem for the design industry. Its annual event, FUTUR SHOCK Chapter Three: Abyssal, features multi-projection immersive performances by invited artists.
Interaction begins with a mechanical hand, which acts as the audience's interface to the system. Each joint is fitted with a potentiometer that maps hand movement to sound modulation parameters, such as amplitude, resonance, and filters. When the hand moves, the sound changes, when the sound changes, so do the vibrational patterns.
We used Arduino and potentiometers to capture finger movement data—two data points per finger, resulting in five sets and a total of ten values. These values are used to control the frequency and volume of five different sounds in real time.
A microscopic world shaped by sound—abstract forms, realistic textures, bioluminescent glow, and organic patterns. Photorealistic, cinematic, and sci-fi inspired.
